It's easy to get around Whittier, given the city's close proximity to the San Gabriel River Freeway (I-605) and I-5. In addition, four different public bus lines provide service between Whittier and other points throughout Los Angeles County. The Sunshine Shuttle provides transportation within Whittier and neighboring South and West Whittier. For trips outside of the region, Los Angeles International Airport is less than an hour's drive away and offers non-stop service to more than 175 cities throughout North America and beyond.
Whittier and Los Angeles is home to a number of festive annual events. These include a summer craft beer and food festival and a holiday parade. Nearby Pasadena hosts the annual Rose Bowl parade and football game on New Year's Day as well as a weekly flea market and swap meet at the Rose Bowl stadium.
There's no lack of cultural activities in this part of southern California. Whittier has a community theater that produces a full schedule of musical, dramatic and artistic performances. The region is also home to the Pasadena Playhouse, the Norton Simon Museum, the Huntington Library and Art Collections and the Southern California Shakespeare Festival.
Historic buildings in Whittier include the Pio Pico House, the final residence of the last Mexican governor of the territory of California; the restored 1930s-era Hoover Hotel and the Southern Pacific Railroad Depot, built in 1890.
Whittier residents need never go hungry. This southern California city offers a diverse array of coffee houses, delis and restaurants. Among the local favorites are Bizarra Capital for Mexican cuisine, the California Grill for innovative regional cuisine, and Lascari's for Italian food.
Whittier Neighborhood Schools
School age residents in Whittier attend the Whittier Union High School District. The district, which has an enrollment of around 13,000 students, owns and manages five high schools and three alternative schools. For elementary and middle school, there are three districts, depending on where in Whittier you live, including the Whittier School District, the East Whittier City School District and the South Whittier School District. In addition to the public schools, there are a number of private schools in the area. These include Plymouth Congregational School, Carden School of Whittier and Whittier Christian School. For post-secondary education, Southern California is home to numerous colleges and universities. Whittier College, a private liberal arts college founded by the Quaker church, is located directly in town. In addition, the region is home to the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Southern California and the California Institute of Technology.
