Santa Ana is divided into several unique districts. At the center of the city is the "Downtown" area that has both housing and retail. Close to the intersection of the Santa Ana Freeway and the Costa Mesa Freeway, residents enjoy the "Metro East" district, a newer district that serves as a mixed-use development district. The Santa Ana Zoo, popular for its collection of monkeys, is also on the east side. The southeast end of the city is a popular destination for shopping. It is part of the South Coast Metro area, along with the city of Costa Mesa. South Coast Plaza is the main shopping center that draws crowds. it also has several high-rise office and apartment buildings.

Santa Ana Neighborhood Schools
The majority of residents in Santa Ana are zoned for school attendance in the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD). SAUSD is recognized as the largest school district in Orange County and as the seventh largest school district in the State. The district spans twenty four miles, covering parts of Santa Ana, Tustin, Irvine, Costa Mesa, and Newport Beach.
