The San Juan Hills Country Club features a public golf course and driving range. Beach access is available at Doheny State Beach, a 10-minute drive from San Juan Capistrano.

Students in San Juan Capistrano attend schools in the Capistrano Unified School District, the second largest in Orange County. Schools in city limits include Harold Ambuehl Elementary School and San Juan Hills High School, both of which receive excellent scores of eight or nine out of 10 from the school ranking website GreatSchools.org. There are several parochial schools and college preparatory academies in the city, including Mission Basilica School and Saddleback Valley Christian School. The nearest community college is Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.
