Just outside of town is Almansor Park in Alhambra. Of course, Pacific Ocean beaches are just a short drive away.
It's easy to get around San Gabriel, given the city's centralized Los Angeles County location. Interstate 10 runs just south of the city and connects the area with Los Angeles to the west and El Monte to the east. In addition, two public bus lines provide service between the city and other points throughout Los Angeles County. For trips outside of the region, Los Angeles International Airport is less than an hour's drive away and offers non-stop service to more than 175 cities throughout North America and beyond. Bob Hope Airport in Burbank is even closer.
San Gabriel and other points in Los Angeles County are home to a number of festive annual events. These include the annual Lunar New Year festival and the Dumpling and Beer Fest. Nearby Pasadena hosts the annual Rose Bowl parade and football game on New Year's Day as well as a weekly flea market and swap meet at the Rose Bowl stadium.
There's no lack of cultural activities in this part of southern California. San Gabriel has a small community playhouse as well as the Ramona Museum of California History. The region is also home to the Pasadena Playhouse, the Norton Simon Museum, the Huntington Library and Art Collections and the Southern California Shakespeare Festival.
San Gabriel residents will have no problem finding places to eat. This southern California city offers a diverse array of coffee houses, delis and restaurants. Among the local favorites are Babita Restaurant for Mexican cuisine, Pa Pa Walk for Chinese and Com Tam Thuan Kieu for Vietnamese fare.
San Gabriel Neighborhood Schools
Children of San Gabriel residents attend the public schools of the San Gabriel Unified School District. The district, which has an enrollment of around 1,800 students, owns and manages seven schools -- five elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. In addition to the public schools, there are a number of private schools in the area. These include San Gabriel Christian School, Saint Anthony School and the Clairborn School. For post-secondary education, Southern California is home to numerous colleges and universities. Whittier College, a private liberal arts college founded by the Quaker church, is located just south of town and the California Institute of Technology is located just north of town in Pasadena. In addition, the region is home to the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Southern California (USC).
