The neighborhood was established in 1887 when Jouette Allen purchased 1,000 acres, anticipating an uptick in real estate development and traffic from the Southern Pacific Railroad. As one of the Northern San Fernando Valley’s oldest neighborhoods, Pacoima’s history traces even farther back, over 1,500 years, when the Tataviam tribe first established villages here.
Home to over 75,250, Pacoima covers 7.14 square miles and lies just 23 miles north of Downtown Los Angeles. The neighborhood’s borders include the city of San Fernando on its northern side, the Lake View Terrace community on its eastern side, the Sun Valley neighborhood on its southern side, and Panorama City on its western side. The city of Burbank is less than 20 miles south.
Pacoima’s weather adds to the overall appeal of the area. The highest temperatures can reach 92°F during the warmest months and don’t typically drop below 52°F during winter. Rain is most common between January and March, averaging five days per month.

The Pacoima Public Health Center is available to patients living in the Northwest and Northeast San Fernando Valley. Hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and free and low-cost services are available through scheduled appointments or the walk-in nurse clinic. Panorama City Medical Center, located approximately 15 minutes from Pacoima in the Panorama City neighborhood, offers emergency services seven days a week, among other options.
Planet Fitness is an affordable gym in nearby Lake View Terrace. However, within Pacoima are the David M. Gonzalez, Richie Valens, and Hubert H. Humphrey recreation centers, where visitors can enjoy each facility’s programs and sports features for exercise.

The Panorama Mall’s store hours are Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m, unless otherwise noted.
