Long Beach Community Amenities
Long Beach has something for everyone, from the history buff to the surfer and the street art fan. It’s the departure point for Carnival Cruise Line vessels to several ports. Residents can fly out of the Long Beach Airport or Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Transportation within the city is the responsibility of Long Beach Transit, which operates a free shuttle to sites such as the Aquarium of the Pacific, the Long Beach Convention Center, and the historic Queen Mary. In the summer, its catamaran transports passengers between the downtown waterfront to the Alamitos Bay Landing. A light rail service runs between Long Beach and downtown Los Angeles. Major highways include the San Diego Freeway (I-405), the Golden State/Santa Ana Freeway (I-5), the Long Beach Freeway (I-710), and the Harbor Freeway (I-110). The Pacific Coast Highway runs through the southern part of the city. Long Beach is also known as a very bicycle-friendly city. Several large corporations have headquarters there, among them Epson America and Pioneer Electronics. The two largest employers are the Long Beach Unified School District and the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
Art buffs love exploring local attractions such as the Long Beach Museum of Art and the University Art Museum. The city is also well known for its street art. Music fans can attend performances of the Long Beach Symphony and the Long Beach Opera. The city also has several theater companies. Water buffs love life on the beach, visiting the Aquarium of the Pacific, and taking singing gondolier journeys through Naples’ canals. In addition to enjoying local baseball and basketball, sports fans sometimes make a quick trip to Los Angeles to take in a Rams or a Lakers game or to just enjoy a night on the town.
Long Beach Neighborhood Schools
The Long Beach Unified School District is responsible for the public schools that serve a majority of Long Beach. Other districts that also serve the city include the Los Angeles Unified School District, ABC Unified School District, and Paramount Unified School District. More than a dozen private schools educate elementary, middle school, and high school students. California State University, Long Beach has more than 35,000 students and is part of the state university network. Long Beach City College is a community college with two campuses in the city. DeVry University, Long Beach offers both undergraduate and graduate programs. The Pacific Coast University School of Law is in Long Beach. The city is also home to several trade and career schools.
