The land that is now the city was a part of a land grant given by the Spanish government in the 1780's. During those early years and beyond, the community was a prominent agricultural center. After World War Ii, the city, which had developed rapidly due to the railway system and local manufacturing, became more of a bedroom community. It was an important suburb of Los Angeles for many years.
