Lake Forest secondary students in public school attend El Toro High School. Opened in 1973, it has a reputation as a top-ranking Southern California school. The city is also home to Escalade Academy, a private high school. Lake Forest elementary students can attend these schools: Santiago, Olivewood, La Madera, Rancho Canada, Lake Forest, and Ralph A. Gates. Serrano Intermediate School serves grades 7 and 8. Local private and middle schools include Arbor Christian, Lake Forest Montessori, Abiding Savior Lutheran, Montessori on the Lake, and Grace Christian. Seven colleges and universities with more than 2,000 students each are within 12 miles of the city. Students can choose from among the University of Phoenix-Southern California Campus in Costa Mesa, Coastline Community College in Fountain Valley, the University of California-Irvine, Concordia University-Irvine, Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, Irvine Valley College, and Brandman University in Irvine. Lake Forest is also home to the Marinello Schools of Beauty.
