The Fullerton Arboretum sits on 26 acres in the northeastern part of the city and includes many unique plants and sculpted gardens. Fullerton has around 200 acres of land near the Brea Dam Recreational Area, as well as two golf courses, an equestrian center with trails, a swim complex, and a tennis center. The city is home to some of the most unusual attractions in Orange County, among them the Muckenthaler Cultural Center, the historic downtown area, the Fullerton Museum, and the Leo Fender Gallery. Locals enjoy browsing an abundance of retail shops and boutiques and taking in the weekly Fullerton Market. Home of the county hardcore punk music scene, the guitar-producing Fender musical instrument company, and Burger Records, the city has a vibrant musical heritage. It also hosts a diverse theater environment that includes large-scale productions put on by local secondary schools and colleges. Anaheim, home of Disneyland, is only three miles away.
The five largest employers in Fullerton are California State University, Fullerton; St. Jude Medical Center; Raytheon; the Fullerton School District; and Fullerton College. Individuals who want to commute to Los Angeles have good transportation options. Three major freeways cross the city. Running east to west is State Route 91, along the length of Fullerton south of Orangethorpe Avenue. This highway intersects with the Santa Ana Freeway -- Interstate 5 -- near Magnolia Avenue to the west, the principal access to Los Angeles. It also intersects with the Orange Freeway -- Route 57 -- near State College Boulevard to the east. Fullerton Municipal Airport is the last area link to the Hughes Company. It is the only remaining general aviation airport in the county.
Fullerton Neighborhood Schools
The city’s motto is “We Are the Education Community.” The Fullerton School District is responsible for learning in two public elementary schools with grades K-8, Fisler and Beechwood. Fifteen other elementary schools serve K-6 students. Public school students in grades 7 and 8 attend one of three junior high schools, Nicolas, D. Russell Parks Junior High, or Ladera Vista. Within the city limits, the Fullerton Joint Union High School District is responsible for five public high schools. They include Sunny Hills, Fullerton Union, Troy, La Vista, and La Sierra. La Vista and La Sierra are continuation schools situated next to Troy. Fullerton Union is the oldest Orange County High School and offers an Academy of the Arts magnet program. A number of parochial and other private institutions serve local students. Fullerton is also home to six post-secondary educational institutions: California State University, Fullerton; Fullerton College (two-year community college), Western State College of Law at Argosy University; Marshall B. Ketchum University (health sciences); Grace Mission University; and Hope International University.
