It was built in 1818 by Francisco Ávila and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic-Cultural Monument.

The community has a strong youth sports program as well as an adult sports program. There's a local community golf course present as well. Bell Gardens also offers several playgrounds and green spaces where residents can relax and enjoy the outdoors, including John Ford Park, where waterfowl can be seen swimming in the lake.
Residents have access to the Montebello Unified School District. The Bell Gardens High School is the largest school in the community.
